The Tao of Moving Big Things
By John Rowley
The Tao is the way. All things are the Tao and the Tao is all things. The way must be followed and ridden
like the leaf rides the river.
The Principles of the Tao are:
1. Know the Tao
2. Know and harness the potential energy of the log
3. Remember the lever
4. Remember the inclined plane
5. Remember the fulcrum
6. Know the axe
7. Entropy is increasing, Entropy is your ally.
8. Do not disregard the quantum behavior of matter
9. Know the oneness of the universe, the log is not your
opponent; it is an extension of you, it is a teacher.
The Way of the Tao is the way of a man on the trail looking for the trail. The way, the path, the trail, the
Tao.

The Practical Art of Moving Big Things
By Aaron Klug
1. Make no mistake the log is a cocksucking bastard. It must be treated accordingly if one is to achieve
anything.
2. Recognize that the very essence of your job disrupts and subverts the natural order of the forest.
Blowdown and erosion are natural, trail corridors and crib logs are not. Abandon Romanticism.
3. Nature will virulently defend her state, even against the factions within herself. You must violently
oppose these defenses if you are to do your job.
4. Patience lends itself to complacency, complacency to failure. We got no time to be patient.
5. First mode of attack is always brute strength.* Levers, wedges, pulleys, winches, etc. are secondary
options.
6. Prideful aggression is better than passive contemplation.
7. Vocalize your prideful aggression [ex. "We're drilling this mountain a new fucking asshole!" Ben Wilson]
8. Entropy Shmentropy. It's all nonsense. Expediently impose whatever necessary upon log, rock, or
mountain.
